Our Story

Sycamore Studio emerged from the Sycamore School, a forward-thinking elementary school that served the community for ten years in Malibu, CA.

The school was established in 2015 as an exciting alternative to traditional methods, with an emphasis on engaging, continuous, and future-focused education.

Though the school is suspending operations in the aftermath of the January 2025 Palisades Fire, Sycamore Studio is committed to continuing the mission and vision through our approach of hands-on creative education.

The Sycamore School

Over the course of 10 years, the Sycamore school enriched the lives of hundreds of children and their families. It was a place where kids wanted to be. It was a place where the work felt meaningful and interesting. We wouldn't be the types of teachers and facilitators that we are without Sycamore. Our mission and mindsets are products of the school's founding and our shared knowledge of design, curriculum, and assessment developed through countless lesson plans and projects. We are grateful for our roots, established by the founders, Christy Durham, Tedd Wakeman, and AJ Webster and to all the staff who grew the school into a vibrant learning community. And we are equally grateful to all the families, who supported the school and still believe in the mission.

"Where wonder was essential, creativity was foundational, and students were inspired to boldly imagine a world in contrast with the ordinary. We believed in the power of curious, independent problem-solvers who saw a connection between their learning and the world beyond the classroom doors...it is our hope that the spirit of Sycamore will live on- in every question asked, every challenge embraced, and every spark of imagination carried forward. Never stop wondering, never stop creating, never stop believing in the power of change!" - Founders' Statement
